Each character has specific elemental properties: Fireboy must stay away from water, Watergirl must avoid lava, and the new friends introduced in this installment have their own unique strengths and weaknesses that must be utilized to overcome obstacles.

The controls remain intuitive but require precise timing. Fireboy is moved using the Arrow Keys, while Watergirl is controlled using the AWD keys. For the additional friends, specific keys like the JIKL set or other designated key mappings are used, allowing for local multiplayer or challenging solo play. You must toggle between characters or work together with friends to activate pressure plates, push blocks, and flip switches that open gates for the rest of the team.

The goal of every level is to lead all characters to their respective exit doors safely. Along the way, you should collect the colorful diamonds that match each character’s element to achieve the highest possible rank. Cooperation is mandatory, as many puzzles are designed so that one character must hold a trap open while another passes through. Avoid the deadly black pools at all costs, as they are lethal to everyone, and ensure that every team member reaches the exit, or the level will not be completed.
